Artist Statement:
This piece shows two young children sleeping. As a parent it is a sacred moment when their innocence and need for nurturance and guidance becomes abundantly clear. The parents are in control of their exposure and are the puppeteers of the shutter pulls. When do you open the shutter wide open, when do you close it, when do you let a variance of light in? The hands represent the multitude of outside influences that will also contribute to a child’s life. As the controller of the shutter there also lies the responsibility to present a world of great opportunity, equality and empathy, but also a realistic world that sometimes requires change and caution.
