Artist Statement:
“The American Dream" explores what constitutes a dream, and to what length one will go to reach fulfillment. Far too often people overextend or compromise themselves to try to acquire a "dream" or are mislead by others who in turn are trying to acquire their "dreams". In the housing market specifically in 2008, people who thought they were living the American Dream began to loose their homes due to credit issues. Dreams that were bought on unstable, sinking grounds, unbeknownst to them, were quickly slipping away. The flag, made of disassembled zippers, is shown flying at half mast and a lock is on the white picket fence, a long time symbol for what is considered to be ideal. The key lies in a treasure chest on another shore. Suggesting the American Dream, or any individual dream, might be found elsewhere in what is treasured most by a person or a country. Within the gate is a structure suggesting a house or sacred place. The idea that what is sacred can be found in family, community, transparency and truth.
